Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

COMMUNITY IS OUR PURPOSE

This month, we welcome summer and celebrate the rich community of artists and other creatives, as well as thought leaders and lifelong students, who make the Museum a special place for connection, expression, and dialogue. Together, we renew Isabella Stewart Gardner’s mission of a vibrant gathering space “for the education and enjoyment of the public forever.”

When Isabella established the Museum with this promise, she created a vital legacy of civic leadership in the city we call home. She understood that encounters with art could be transformative, offering a means of connecting to each other across time and place. We continue to deepen and expand her vision through our collaborations with artists and community organizations across the Boston area. By co-creating experiences that bring us together and help us navigate our fractured world, we can build our understanding and appreciation of varied cultures and perspectives. Programs at the Museum are one of the many ways we bring Isabella’s passion to life and activate this commitment to the public.

We invite you to revel in Pride, honor Juneteenth, and immerse yourself in our upcoming exhibition that explores plants in contemporary art and our relationship with the natural world. From artmaking in the Bertucci Education Studio to timely conversations in Calderwood Hall, there are many ways to explore and find connections and community.

Juneteenth: Celebrating Voices of Boston
Monday, June 19, 11 am - 5 pm
Bring family and friends to honor Juneteenth, the oldest nationally-recognized commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Join poet Amanda Shea, DJ KNSZWRTH, artist and Gardner Luminary Rob Stull, and more for a day of performance, conversation, and activities that celebrate community, freedom, and the stories, perspectives, and struggles of Bostonians of color who continue to reside, build, and thrive in our city. Tickets are free with advance registration.

Presence of Plants in Contemporary Art
Opening June 22
Eight international artists working with living plant material have been selected to create works throughout the Museum. From an image born of growing grass to a cinematic reflection on eco-queer themes, to a suspended vertical garden on the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade, these thought-provoking and beautiful works mirror the transitory existence of the artists who cultivate them and the audiences that experience them.

Live Matter: Contemporary Artists on Plants in Practice
Thursday, June 22, 7 - 8:30 pm
On the public opening evening of Presence of Plants in Contemporary Art, exhibiting artists Piero Golia and Natalie Jeremijenko are in conversation with exhibition curators Pieranna Cavalchini, Tom and Lisa Blumenthal Curator of Contemporary Art, and Charles Waldheim, Ruettgers Curator of Landscape and Irving Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Learn about how these artists work with living plant material and what plants can teach us about our place on this planet. Reserve your tickets now.

Meet the Ambassadors

The Gardner Museum has partnered with Bunker Hill Community College, and more recently, UMass Boston, to offer meaningful internships to students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the museum field. The goal of preparing these young adults for professions in the art industry has proven successful with positions in the Museum’s Education, Conservation, Visitor Services, Development, and Finance departments being filled with Gardner Ambassador graduates over the past three years.

Meet the Luminaries

Modeled after Isabella’s legacy as a curator and hostess of artist salons around the turn of the century, the Neighborhood Salon is a gathering of Boston’s most innovative and thoughtful creatives, who participate in an active exchange of ideas and contribute to programming across the Museum. We’re thrilled to introduce you to our latest group of local artists and Luminary co-facilitator Luana Morales.
